About us
SJVAir is a network of more than 400 air monitors spread across the San Joaquin Valley. These monitors provide real-time air pollution levels to people living in the area. SJVAir includes an automated text message system that provides residents air quality alerts based on the monitor nearest their home, work and/or school, as well as a mobile app that shows real-time air quality data and sends notifications based on the user’s location, pulling information from the nearest monitor.
What is PM 2.5
PM 2.5 refers to particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. These particles are extremely small and primarily produced by combustion, including diesel trucks, wood burning, and even charbroiling. PM 2.5 particles are small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs potentially causing a range of health problems, especially for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, like asthma.
The San Joaquin Valley experiences the highest concentrations of ambient PM2.5 in the United States, with Bakersfield and Fresno routinely ranked as the most polluted (PM2.5) cities in the country. Monitoring and controlling PM 2.5 levels are critically important for meeting air quality standards and protecting public health.
